BioUtah Hosts Fall BBQ

BioUtah's annual membership appreciation BBQ was held yesterday at the Gateway’s Hidden Gem Patio. The event was a great way for the nearly 200 registrants to network with colleagues and make new friends. Prior to the BBQ, an executive reception was held. Also, in conjunction with the event the local RAPS and ASQ chapters hosted a meeting at Altitude Lab at which BioUtah CEO, Kelvyn Cullimore was the featured speaker.

BioUtah Participates in American Cancer Society Policy Panel Presentation

The American Cancer Society – Cancer Action Network (ACS-CAN) hosted a panel at the Utah State Capitol on September 12, 2023. Kelvyn Cullimore, BioUtah’s CEO, participated as a panelist. Other panelists included legislators, patient advocates, SelectHealth, and physicians. The panel focused on three policy issues:

• The impact of co-pay accumulator programs being instituted by insurance companies and their impact on cancer patients
• The need to support multi-cancer screening tests – an emerging technology
• The advent of biomarker testing and how it can be implemented to save lives and save money for insurance companies in the long run

Phoenix PharmaLabs’ Lead Compound, PPL-138, Offers Promise as PTSD/AUD Treatment

Phoenix PharmaLabs announced that in vivo studies demonstrated that the company’s lead compound, PPL-138, reduced symptoms of PTSD and decreased alcohol consumption in a rat model of PTSD/AUD (alcohol abuse disorder). The work conducted at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and Florida Atlantic University under a grant from the US Department of Defense, funded through the Pharmacotherapies for Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders Alliance, demonstrates that PPL-138 may have potential to be an effective treatment for these common comorbid disorders.

Canary Speech and Galvan featured in article in Utah Business

Utah Business features Utah companies Galvan and Canary Speech, who together, are closing the gap between self and industry mental healthcare with a new AI-powered wellness app. The app uses vocal recognition technology and biomarkers to detect the quality of the user’s mental health.

Henry O’Connell, CEO of Canary Speech, says the company began their research for the app by capturing audio of patients evaluated for depression and anxiety in clinical environments.

BioMade reports a $700k grant to Utah consortium

A project entitled, "Utah Bioindustrial Manufacturing: An Ecosystem to Grow for the Future " sponsored by a consortium comprised of Utah STEM Foundation, Talent Ready Utah, Checkerspot, Technology Holding, Utah Valley University, and Salt Lake Community College was awarded a $700K grant by BioMADE.. 

BioMADE's mission is to enable domestic bioindustrial manufacturing at all scales, develop technologies to enhance U.S. bioindustrial competitiveness, de-risk investment in relevant infrastructure and expand the biomanufacturing worforce.

The Utah project will create secondary and post-secondary educational pathways.

CMS Touts TCET Proposal

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently sought public comments on its Transitional Coverage for Emerging Technologies (TCET) pathway. In this JAMA Health Forum article, the agency outlines the pathway and says it reflects a balanced approach that promotes faster access to new technologies by implementing transparent, predictable, and efficient coverage review processes.

"The TCET pathway aims to accelerate national coverage where the evidence supports it but may offer transitional coverage for technologies that do not yet satisfy the reasonable and necessary standard when they first enter the market," states CMS.

BioUtah submitted comments, noting that while the TCET proposal was a good step forward, more needed to be done to fully bridge the gap between FDA clearance or approval and Medicare coverage.

House Tri-Committee Bipartisan Bill Aims to Lower Costs, Increase Healthcare Transparency

Bipartisan legislation to increase healthcare price transparency and lower costs for patients and employers was recently introduced by leaders of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Ways and Means Committee and Education and Workforce Committee. The bill incudes provisions to rein in pharmacy benefit managers by establishing certain reporting requirements and banning the practice of spread pricing in Medicaid.

The IRA Must Change to Help Rare Disease Patients

In a forceful op-ed published in leading science and health outlet STAT, NORD President and CEO Peter L. Saltonstall and BIO CEO Rachel King make the case that the Inflation Reduction Act must change to help people living with rare diseases.

Efforts to study drugs for additional rare diseases must not be penalized, the hope of too many rare disease patients with unmet medical needs depends on them. In the op-ed, co-authored with BIO CEO Rachel King, they call for making the changes necessary to the IRA to better encourage continued and future rare disease drug development.

FDA Takes Action on Updated mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines to Better Protect Against Currently Circulating Variants

This week, the FDA took action approving and authorizing for emergency use updated COVID-19 vaccines formulated to more closely target currently circulating variants and to provide better protection against serious consequences of COVID-19, including hospitalization and death. Today’s actions relate to updated mRNA vaccines for 2023-2024 manufactured by ModernaTX Inc. and Pfizer Inc.

Those five years of age and older are eligible if they have not been previously vaccinated in the last two months.

The FDA has issued the following three draft guidances to help strengthen and modernize the 510(k) Program.

The three draft guidances are:

• Best Practices for Selecting a Predicate Device to Support a Premarket Notification [510(k)] Submission
• Recommendations for the Use of Clinical Data in Premarket Notification [510(k)] Submissions
• Evidentiary Expectations for 510(k) Implant Devices

On October 26, 2023, the FDA will host a webinar for industry and other stakeholders interested in learning more about these draft guidances and FDA's efforts to modernize the 510(k) Program.

These solutions, available at the bedside or in vivo will allow physicians to visualize with microscopic precision where cancer ends, enabling them to accurately complete all oncological surgeries and reduce reoperations.
• DHA SBIR 23.3 Phase I & Direct to Phase II and DHA STTR 23.C (GBG pg. 13 – line 49) – Topics of interest include: Rapid Diagnostic for Invasive Fungal Infection; Novel Fieldable Device for Detection of Sleep Microarousals; Multi- faceted mAb Development Program for Multi-Drug Resistant Wound Infections; Exosome Loaded Antibiotics for Bacterial Wound Infections.
