Utah, UK Sign MOU

On Tuesday, BioUtah met with Emma Wade-Smith, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for North America and representatives of the British Consulate in Los Angeles to talk about ways in which the United Kingdom (UK) and Utah’s life sciences industry can work together and advance the sector both here and across the pond. The meeting was organized by the Utah World Trade Center.

The conversation follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in June by Gov. Cox and the UK's Trade Minister Nigel Huddleston.

The U.K.-Utah MOU is the first to prioritize fintech as well as life sciences, aerospace and supply chain resilience.

US Patent Office Allows Patent Claims for IP Exclusively Licensed to Renalytix

The US Patent Office has issued a new notice of allowance of claims surrounding the biomarkers sTNFR1 and sTNFR2 used in Renalytix's kidneyintelX.dkd test. These claims were filed under US Patent Application No. 16/671.256 by the Joslin Diabetes Center and this patent is exclusively licensed to Renalytix. KidneyintelX.dkd received FDA de Novo marketing authorization on June 29, 2023.

MedTech Conference presented by Advamed held in Anaheim October 9-11

Every year, the trade association, Advamed, presents the MedTech Conference. This year it was held in Anaheim, CA. The Conference is the national convention for medical device companies. Presentations included: a panel of FDA's CDRH leadership addressing topics of current interest; keynote speakers including industry leaders from Johnson & Johnson, IBM, Stryker and Medtronic; and numerous breakout sessions on funding, digital health, policy, international, AI, and workforce topics.

Utah's Purgo Scientific was featured among the MedTech Innovator 2023 Cohort and presented on their technology for treating biofilm infections. Also exhibiting at the show was Second Heart, a Utah based company. Of course, many of our larger companies were well represented including BD, Edwards, Stryker, Haemonetics, and Johnson & Johnson.

AdvaMed Launches New Digital Health Tech Division

AdvaMed has formed Digital Health Tech, a new division within the organization that represents the role of digital medtech in transforming health care. The group will act as a thought leader and convener for the industry and focuses on four core policy areas: regulation, payment and health care delivery, data stewardship and privacy, and cybersecurity.

Taha Kass-Hout, chief technology officer at GE HealthCare, was named the division’s first board chair.

GE HealthCare imaging CEO Jan Makela talks Mayo Clinic partnership

GE HealthCare and Mayo Clinic reached an agreement earlier this month to work together on medical technology, building on past work between the two companies that resulted in GE HealthCare including certain features in its products. The companies laid out four focus areas for the partnership: magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound technology, AI, and theranostics — a type of cancer treatment.

$500,000 in SBA STEP Grants to Pursue Global Opportunities

Utah has received $500,000 to support export growth among small businesses as part of the SBA's State Trade Expansion Program (STEP). The grant aims to enhance global success for Utah companies and is administered by World Trade Center Utah in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity.
