Senator Mike Lee Tours Stryker Neurovascular Division
July 22, 2021
U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) on July 16 toured Stryker’s Neurovascular Division with division President, Mark Paul, joined by BioUtah President and CEO, Kelvyn Cullimore and members of the Senator’s staff.
During the tour, Lee learned about the innovative, best-in-class technologies manufactured at the Salt Lake City facility to treat stroke patients. Stroke is the number one cause of disability in the U.S. and the fifth leading cause of death.
“It was an honor to host Senator Mike Lee at our Stryker Neurovascular Division in Salt Lake City last week and show him the work we do here to innovate stroke care solutions,” said Mark Paul, president of the Neurovascular Division of Stryker. “We’re pleased the Senator recognizes the important contributions of Stryker and the entire Utah BioHive to improving and saving lives.”
Senator Lee discussed the importance of pro-innovation policies and praised Stryker’s mission as well as the BioHive branding effort. BioUtah has launched an initiative to the brand the industry as “BioHive” – capturing in just one word the totality of the state’s vibrant life sciences hub – one of the fastest growing in the nation.
“BioHive is a key example of Utah’s environment of innovation,” said Senator Lee. “My recent visit with Mark Paul and his team at Stryker Neurovascular highlighted the bright minds Utah has at work saving and improving lives across the globe. In fact, to spread the word about BioHive, I’m going to prominently display a BioHive banner in the ‘In Utah’ room I’ve created in my Washington, D.C. office to showcase all that our state has to offer.”
The visit included a hands-on experience in the facility’s nationally renowned physician training center – outfitted with fully integrated operations rooms – where the Senator gowned up to “practice” a procedure on a plastic spine model.
“There’s nothing like seeing innovation up close and personal,” said Kelvyn Cullimore, president and CEO of BioUtah. “We’re very grateful for the Senator’s continued interest in our industry and his support for federal policies that promote, rather than impede entrepreneurship and the next generation of healthcare breakthroughs.”
Before departing, the Senator was briefed on Stryker’s footprint in Utah. The company currently employs 635 Utahns and expects that number to reach 1,000 in the next few years.
