Reps. Stewart and Curtis Health Staff Tour Life Sciences Companies

February 24, 2022

Over the last couple of weeks, health legislative staff for Utah Reps. Chris Stewart (R-UT) and John Curtis (R-UT) have been touring a number of the state’s life sciences companies to learn more about their innovative work and our growing BioHive.

Colleen Malloy White, on behalf of Curtis, visited IONIQ Sciences, ARUP Laboratories and ATL Technology. She also had an opportunity to meet life sciences executives who call Park City home. Curtis sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee and its Subcommittee on Health with jurisdiction over policy matters impacting our industry, including FDA regulation, user fees and public health.

Connor Meyers, on behalf of Stewart, visited Varex Imaging, Stryker, IONIQ Sciences and BioFire Diagnostics. In addition to discussing IONIQ’s mission to revolutionize cancer detection at its earliest stages, Meyers stressed Stewart’s interest in understanding the supply chain challenges facing Utah life sciences companies.

Varex, Stryker and BioFire all shared their challenges in securing semi-conductor chips and other materials. Stewart sits on the House Appropriations Committee which directs government funding priorities. He is also a member of the China Task Force focused on finding ways to strengthen our domestic supply chain and reduce our reliance on foreign countries, such as China.

“We’re very fortunate to have such engaged lawmakers representing the BioHive in Congress,” noted Kelvyn Cullimore, president and CEO of BioUtah.

A big BioUtah thank you to Reps. Curtis and Stewart and their staff for their interest and support!
