Rep. Burgess Owens Spends a Day in the BioHive

September 8, 2022

Utah life sciences companies took center stage September 2, as U.S. Representative Burgess Owens (R-UT) toured Canyon Labs, Ultradent (Canyon Labs’ parent company), Ortho Development and Xenter – all innovative leaders in advancing medical technologies that improve patient care and provide jobs for hundreds of Utahns. BioUtah helped to facilitate the BioHive day.

“Utah is home to hundreds of the fastest-growing life sciences and healthcare companies in the nation,” said Rep. Owens. “That’s no accident. Our state is firing on all cylinders because of collaborative partnerships like BioUtah and generations of strong leadership spanning education, business and service. I’ll continue to bring the voices of these dynamic industries to the table as we work to ensure Utah remains a national example of how to innovate and do business.”

“It was an honor to host Rep. Burgess Owens and BioUtah last week at Ultradent Products, Inc. and its subsidiary, Canyon Labs,” said Dr. Haven McCall, CEO of Canyon Labs and vice president quality assurance and regulatory affairs of Ultradent. “The delegation toured our state-of-the-art laboratories, visited manufacturing facilities and met with our leadership team to discuss our goals for future growth.”

From critical laboratory testing services and oral health to joint replacements and propelling healthcare into the digital age, Owens was able to see first-hand the important work these companies do.

Throughout the day, Owens had the chance to sit down with key executives to learn about opportunities and challenges ahead. Workforce and supply chain issues were discussed as well as the need to ensure that federal policies promote, rather than stand in the way of next-gen solutions.

“Rep. Owens recognizes the pivotal role that our industry (collectively known as BioHive) plays in powering discovery, fueling the state’s economy and transforming healthcare,” said Kelvyn Cullimore, president and CEO of BioUtah. “We’re fortunate that Rep. Owens takes such a direct and personal interest in the life sciences industry.”

“We are grateful for our partnerships with Rep. Owens and BioUtah as we work together to drive healthcare forward throughout the world. We are also proud to be part of Utah’s thriving life sciences community,” added McCall.
