First Successful Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplant Using Deceased Donor in Blood Cancer Clinical Trial

For the first time ever, a patient has received an allogeneic stem cell transplant using a deceased donor graft as part of a blood cancer clinical trial at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah. An allogeneic transplant uses stem cells from a donor, rather than the patient themselves, to replace damaged or diseased bone marrow, offering potential new treatment possibilities for patients with blood cancers and other serious conditions.

President Trump Issues EO on Most-Favored-Nation Prescription Drug Pricing

On May 12, President Trump issued an Executive Order (EO) “Delivering Most-Favored-Nation Prescription Drug Pricing to American Patients” to utilize most-favored-nation (MFN) prescription drug pricing. MFN drug pricing ties the price of medications purchased in the U.S. to the lowest price paid in other countries. The EO directs HHS to take specific actions to lower prescription drug prices, including setting MFN price targets, facilitating direct-to-consumer purchasing of drugs, and considering rulemaking or other aggressive measures if manufacturers don't make sufficient progress.

Trump Administration Announces Trade Agreement with China

On May 12, the Trump Administration announced that it had reached an agreement with China on a 90-day pause on tariffs, with both sides substantially reducing tariff levels by 115%. The U.S. will reduce its reciprocal tariff on China to a 10% baseline rate but retain all duties imposed before April 2, 2025, including Section 301, Section 232, antidumping and countervailing duty orders, most favored nation tariffs, and tariffs related to the 20% fentanyl national emergency under IEEPA—resulting in a 30% base tariff on Chinese goods for the next 90 days, plus any applicable preexisting tariffs. China will reciprocally reduce its tariff on U.S. imports from 125% to 10% during the same period. Both countries implemented these reductions as of May 14.

House Committees Advance Reconciliation Bills

Both the House Ways and Means and Energy and Commerce Committees considered and reported out their portions of the "One Big Beautiful Bill," otherwise known as Reconciliation. The House Energy and Commerce Committee's bill included PBM reforms, certain work requirements for Medicaid, and fixes to the IRA that disincentivizes the development of drugs for rare disease.

The Ways and Means Committee bill, in addition to extending the Trump tax cuts, preserves the 21% corporate tax rate, restores 100% bonus depreciation, and reinstates immediate expensing of domestic R&D costs.

Next stop. Bills from these and other House Committees will be packaged and finalized for House floor debate during a House Budget Committee markup May 16.

STEP Grants Available to Help Cover Costs of International Trade Shows and Trade Missions

Utah has received $500,000 to support export growth among small businesses as part of the SBA's State Trade Expansion Program (STEP). The grant aims to enhance global success for Utah companies and is administered by World Trade Center Utah in partnership with the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity.
