The 2022 TEConomy Report Shows Utah continues to be a leader in life sciences

In a press release today, BioUtah announces the findings of the 2022 TEConomy report entitled, The US Bioscience Industry: Fostering Innovation and Driving America's Economy Forward, capturing data through 2021. The report was commissioned by the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, or BIO. The report examines the bioscience industry's impact on the national economy and provides state specific data, with Utah and its major metropolitan areas ranking high in specialized employment concentration in three major sectors - medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and research, testing and medical laboratories. It also showed Utah was among the top 10 states for per capita VC investment between 2018 - 2021.

In the Medical Device Sector, Utah ranked 5th in employment growth among all states. Utah’s metropolitan areas ranked high in employment specialization. Utah’s metropolitan areas ranked high in employment specialization as evidenced by their location quotients compared to the national average quotient of 1.00.

Salt Lake City Metro Area ranked 2nd in large metro areas with a location quotient of 5.22 or 522% above the national average. It also ranked 7th in total jobs in the medical device sector among major metro areas.
Ogden-Clearfield ranked 5th in medium sized metro areas with a location quotient of 2.60, or 260% above the national average.
Logan ranked 7th in small metro areas with a location quotient of 4.45, or 445% above the national average.

We are once again organizing our annual Life Sciences Day on Capitol Hill - in the Utah State Capitol Rotunda. The event is scheduled for January 27, 2023 from 11 AM to 2 PM, with booths available to companies on a first-come, first-served basis.

The gathering allows companies to showcase their technologies that advance patient care and talk one on one with state legislators. Collectively, it's also an opportunity to highlight the depth and breadth of our innovative industry.

Skills-Based Hiring in Utah

The Salt Lake Chamber has been working with Governor Cox’s office on addressing the workforce shortage across Utah. The Governor is seeking best-practice solutions from Utah businesses that are currently implementing skills-based hiring. Skills-based hiring, sometimes called “skills-first” hiring, can help employers increase the size of their talent pools to find quality applicants for hard-to-fill roles.

If your organization is currently practicing skills-based hiring rather than utilizing hiring practices that rely on bachelor’s degree screens, please let the Chamber know. They would like to:

FDA Cut Backs on Accelerated Drug Approvals - More Harm than Good

Designed to speed treatments to patients, FDA's Accelerated Approval (AA) pathway allows drugs for serious diseases that show effectiveness in the lab to enter the market before clinical trials are complete. Since it's inception in 1992, AA has enabled market entry of approximately 300 drugs, mostly for cancer and rare diseases - but in 2022, the FDA granted AA for 10 drugs, fewer than in any of the previous five years.

Congress is considering restrictions to the pathway, concerned that drug makers receiving AA take too long to complete trials, but a report by Vital Transformation finds 75% of AA drugs get full FDA approval within four years. The report also finds about two-thirds of drugs approved would never reach the market if the program was dramatically altered, impacting as many as 3.6 million patients.

NON-DILUTIVE FUNDING: MONTHLY G2G REPORTING SERVICE WEBINARS

BioUtah has partnered with G2G Consulting, a Washington D.C.-based firm, to track the announcement of government grants available for life sciences companies. G2G recently released their December report. Please click here to review that report.

G2G has modified their non-dilutive funding opportunities report layout slightly by dividing the report into two sections – “new opportunities” and “recurring opportunities”.

New opportunities are still organized by relevant categories of interest and have near future deadlines
Recurring opportunities are now arranged by agency or entity, tend to be broad agency announcements which cover a range of interest areas, generally have longer timelines to submit applications, and appear in the report each month.

Every third Friday of the month, G2G hosts an online event to give bioscience companies (i.e. therapeutics, diagnostics, medical device, digital health, etc.) the chance to learn about non-dilutive funding opportunities, such as grants and BAAs that could accelerate company growth.

NIH - I-Corps Opportunity

Are you ready to dive deeper into the entrepreneurial skills needed to commercialize your cancer technology? The I-Corps at NIH program provides the support small businesses need. Participants have used I-Corps at NIH to increase their innovation’s potential to attract prospective investors and obtain partnership opportunities.

Learn more by signing up for the Q&A Office Hour from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023. NCI SBIR experts will provide a brief overview of the program and remain available to answer your questions about the opportunity.

Selected small businesses will receive up to $55,000 to participate in the program. To be considered for the second cohort of 2023, you must apply by 5:00 pm ET on Wednesday, February 1, 2023.
