Jim Greenwood: Thank You and Looking Forward

May 29, 2020

A letter from departing BIO president Jim Greenwood originally sent May 27, 2020

After more than fifteen years as President and CEO of BIO, I will pass the baton to Michelle McMurry-Heath on June 1st. It has been a fascinating period for me and for the biotechnology sector. I am proud of the unparalleled team and the organization I have helped to build and to grow. BIO is a world class advocacy organization that has consistently and effectively advanced the industry and protected it from often intense political and policy pressure.

I have unbounded confidence in the promise of the science and business of biotechnology as long as public policy does not impede innovation.

I believe that two moral precepts must guide public policy. First, no patient should ever lack access to needed medicine because he or she cannot afford what is required to be paid out of pocket and second, no public policy should ever be acceptable if it drives investment away from innovation.

I intend to continue to advocate for these principles as I serve for another year as a consultant to BIO. I also plan to advise and to advocate for individual companies and to serve on two or three boards. If I may be of service, I would be pleased to hear from you.

Thank you for your support for BIO and this transformative industry we have built together.

All the best,

Jim
