BioHive Live, BioHive’s inaugural industry-wide event with over 350 registrants took center stage at the Hale Center Theatre in Sandy, Utah on Wednesday. The event featured a series of thought-provoking speakers who engaged, inspired and challenged the audience. Jared Bauer, CEO of Seek Labs and BioHive board chair, welcomed attendees along with Aimee Edwards, BioHive executive director. Together they stressed the grassroots vision of BioHive Live to bring together employees of the life sciences sector, students in the field and others in the industry trenches.Jay Flatley, former CEO of Illumina, kicked off the event with his talk about the challenges and successes of Illumina and his vision of leadership. In a very touching fireside chat, Denali Therapeutics CEO, Ryan Watts, talked with ALS patient Brian Wallich and Sandra Abrevaya, co-founders of Synapticure and I AM ALS, about their journey. Jay Muse, CEO of Piper Access and Slipstream, and a member of the BioUtah board of directors, turned conventional thinking about entrepreneurship and talent on its head with his talk on The Joy Loop. Other speakers included New York Times best-selling author Liz Wiseman, futurist Taryn Southern, and Najat Kahn of Recursion and formerly J&J in a discussion with SLC Mayor Erin Mendenhall. It was an inspirational day capped off with a mixer in the evening at Edison House.
“When I talk about Utah’s life sciences hub, I like to say that we’re not just building an industry, we’re building a community. ‘BioHive Live’ is a perfect example of that,” commented Kelvyn Cullimore, President and CEO of BioUtah who was in the audience.
