Brian Shiozawa

Brian E. Shiozawa MD is the Associate Vice President for Health Policy and Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Emergency Medicine at University of Utah Health Sciences. From 2017-2019, Dr. Shiozawa served as the Regional Director of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. Appointed by the President, Dr.Shiozawa oversaw operations of HHS for Region 8 that includes Utah, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana.
Dr. Shiozawa is a board Certified Emergency physician. He practiced full time at St. Mark’s Hospital Emergency Department in Salt Lake City, Utah. He served as Department Chairman, President of the St. Mark’s Medical staff and served on the St. Mark’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Shiozawa served as President of the Utah Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians and President of the Utah Medical Association. He served as Utah state delegate to the American Medical Association. Dr. Shiozawa served two terms in the Utah State Senate. He was chairman of the Business, Economic Development and Labor Appropriations Committee, member of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and Social Services Appropriations Committee. He also served on the Health Reform Task Force. Dr. Shiozawa passed as sponsor or co-sponsor over 50 bills, including legislation regarding insurance coverage for children with autism, substance abuse treatment, medical and pharmaceutical regulation, motorcycle helmet use, behavioral health interstate licensure and healthcare research and economic development. Dr. Shiozawa attended Stanford University, received his medical degree from the University of Washington and completed residency at the University of Utah. He and wife Joye have been married for 37 years and have four children and six grandchildren.
